Prepare for Success is an interactive web learning tool for international students who are going to the UK for study in further or higher education. It contains learning resources which are activity-based to help you find out about different aspects of academic life in the UK and the skills needed for effective study. Most importantly, the activities provide opportunities for academic English language improvement.

Academic Word List Games and Quizzes

The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Australia, provides a nice collection of games and activities related to the AWL.

Start at list 1 & 2. The games and quizzes will help you check that you really know these words and can use them effectively. Then continue with the other lists. There are 10 lists in total. 10 minutes a day can make a difference!

Writing for a Purpose

This site provides materials to improve the quality of discipline-specific student work. More specifically, Writing for a Purpose includes information about types of writing and purposes for writing, exercises to help you write, and examples from assignments that successful students have written.

Open Learning Initiative - Carnegie Mellon University

The Open Learning Initiative offers online courses that aim to improve learning in higher education. You can register for their courses free of charge. Once you have registered, you can sign in to the writing course by putting “prose16” as the registration key and then hitting the link “enter course”. The modules in Prose Style provides you with a basic set of concepts and principles to help you produce prose that readers will understand more quickly and easily, and gives you practice in applying those principles. It focuses on the study of articles, agents, and nominalizations.
